Fire Education Program

Encouraging the Use of Presribed Fire

Landowners, local governments, California Native American tribes, non-governmental organizations, corporations, and private citizens throughout the state have become more interested in prescribed fire as a potential tool to reduce the risk of increasingly catastrophic wildfires. However, because prescribed fire use has decreased over the past several decades, the communities in the Southern Sierra Nevada have limited capacity, shared knowledge, and experience in renewing efforts to use prescribed fie on public, tribal and private land. UCCE Mariposa has teamed up with the Southern Sierra Prescribed Fire Council to support the expanded use of prescribed fire for fuels reduction and ecological and cultural restoration.

We will be hosting educational programs about fire ecology and prescribed fire to youth, landowners, prescribed burn associations, and organizations to increase the acceptance of and interest in prescribed fire as one of the essential management tools for public, private and tribal land.

Southern Sierra Regional Prescribed Burn Association

Prescribed Burn Associations encourage the cooperation of local landowners and neighbors to share tools, equipment and manpower to manage and protect their land. If you are interested in finding out more about Prescribed Burn Associations or are interested in joining one of our field days, please email ANRMariposa@ucanr.edu.
